Former welterweight boxing champion Sugar Ray Leonard was burglarized of $34,000 in jewelry and cash early Friday morning, apparently by a woman he met in a local night club, police said.

The incident reportedly occurred at about 5 a.m. in Leonard’s two-story suite at the Alexis Park Resort Hotel, according to police.

Leonard, who won his boxing crown in 1979, was with a business associate earlier when he “had a few drinks with the woman and then showed the woman out and went to bed,” a vice officer handling the case told the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Police suspect that the woman may have returned with a hotel room key possibly stolen from the suite and took $33,000 in jewelry and $1,000 in cash as Leonard slept, Det. Roy Chandler said.

Asked whether the woman was a prostitute, Chandler said, “We’re taking this as a grand larceny report. There was absolutely no prostitution in this thing.”

Leonard did not report the robbery until midday Friday, after he and his business associate returned from a morning meeting and noticed the property was missing, Chandler said. Police did not identify Leonard’s associate.

Chandler said that Leonard or his business associate “asked for this thing to be kept as quiet as possible.”
