Rep. Don Edwards (D-Calif.) has been selected Civil Libertarian of the Year by the San Diego chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California.

Edwards, chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Civil and Constitutional Rights, will be honored today at the ACLU’s annual Bill of Rights banquet at the Hotel del Coronado.

Criminal defense attorney Louis Katz, a former director of the San Diego County Office of Defender Services, will receive the chapter’s Ceil Podoloff award for his longtime devotion to the cause of civil liberties.

Also being honored is Ramona Ripston, executive director of the Southern California ACLU since 1972, who is leaving the post at the end of the year.
