A 58-year-old man was killed in a gun battle with police on a South Los Angeles street. John L. Daniels died from multiple gunshot wounds in the shoot-out with two officers about 2:30 p.m. in the 1600 block of 42nd Street, Lt. Charles Higbie said. Officers Andrew Thedford, 40, and Allan Seeget, 27, responded to a report of a man with a gun and as they drove up, Daniels stepped into the street and approached their patrol car, Higbie said. As the officers got out of the car, the victim reached into his sweater, pulled out a handgun and opened fire, he said. The officers returned fire as Daniels moved behind a parked car. While the man was hiding behind the car, Seeget moved from the police car to a nearby pickup truck, Higbie said. The suspect was killed in a volley of gunfire by the officers when he started to charge toward Seeget, Higbie said.
