Boy Scouts’ Diamond Jubilee Gala Set

On my honor, there’s much excitement about the Diamond Jubilee Celebration on Monday evening, recognizing the 75th birthday of the Boy Scouts of America. Former President Gerald R. Ford and his Rancho Mirage neighbor, Leonard K. Firestone, former ambassador to Belgium, will drive up to join “Mrs. Republican,” Margaret Martin Brock. The trio will receive the Diamond Jubilee Tribute Awards in a gala at the Century Plaza.

About 350 citizens--all Scouting’s Best Friends--such as the Henry Salvatoris and the Holmes Tuttles and Glen and Gloria Holden will pay tribute and raise a tidy sum for the Los Angeles Area Council.

Chadwick School’s 50th anniversary is absolutely golden. On the Palos Verdes Peninsula, supporters of that college preparatory school with all the National Merit Scholars are already polishing those dancing slippers with the good news that Mike Carney will come from New York with his top trumpet player for a major black-tie gala May 3.

We heard the good news at the Seventh Street Bistro from Kathy Rose and Liz Mendel, the development and public relations directors. And, we also hear via the grapevine that Nancy Reagan has booked Carney for a January gala that is to be a Very Important Occasion. Of course, Carney played for Armand Hammer’s festivities for the Prince and Princess of Wales in Palm Beach, and Dec. 20 he does a Congressional dinner at the White House.

Also, famous Chadwick alumni will make this occasion notable. Chairman Mrs. James (Sandy) Worsham (her husband’s chairman of McDonnell Douglas), a mover and shaker in the Long Beach Symphony and a lady who used her clout to airlift supplies to Mexico after the earthquake, is already contacting them, and you know they’ll be loyal, true and blue, which is a Chadwick color.

For starters, Chadwick alums: Liza Minnelli, Christina Crawford Koontz, Joan Benny Blumofe, Ronald Burns, Rick Brynner, Peter Ford, Peter Douglas, Susan Tettemer, Hoagy and Randy Carmichael, Peter Bing, Dawn Linkletter Anderson and Jon Wenner (you can almost guess some of their parents). And notables currently associated with Chadwick: Arthur Laffer, Ken Norris, Ray Watt, Lyn Gelles, Dr. Chadwick Smith, Betty Field, William Pascoe III and Roy Nutt.

This is an eclectic anniversary year. This week students saw the Oregon Shakespearian Festival. In February they view the multimedia film “The Prize.” In March, the Yale Alley Cats will wail nicely, and on and on.

Weta Mathies, wife of Dr. Allen Mathies, chief of Huntington Hospital, is the CARES Horse Show chairman. She’s announcing that William and Marcy Shatner will be honorary co-chairmen of the Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center Auxiliary’s 1986 California National Horse Show on Feb. 5-9 at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center.

Moreover, the Shatners will ride in competition in the saddlebred class.

To announce it all, the CARES are having a horsey kick-off party next Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Polo Club at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center.

Kicking up will be Mrs. Donald Petit, horse show founder; Emily Peck, patron chairman, and Mrs. Harold Howland, CARES president. They’ll be honoring division stake sponsors and box holders.

They’re so proud of this A-rated event that draws 700 horses from across the country, including Morgans, hunters and jumpers, competing for the $52,000 prize money.

All goes to support two child-care centers that service 20,000 children annually, with a lot of love, at the medical center.

The Christmas Boat Parade in Marina del Rey lights up Saturday evening and the Westlake Patrons for Cystic Fibrosis Research will be aboard the “Sundowner” motor yacht watching the spectacle and honoring Jerry and T. J. Berns.

That duo receives “The Possible Dream Award” during the cocktail cruise, the dinner and dancing, according to Sherrie Eisleben. The $75-per-person crowd boards at Fishermans Village for cocktails and fireworks, then has buffet hosted by Terence of London.

The Berns have been chosen for their expert fund-raising efforts for cystic fibrosis.

Proceeds from the Poinsettia Ball at the Sheraton Grande Hotel will support medical research on renal transplants at the Los Angeles Transplant Institute.

Sharyl Mendez, ways and means chairman for the

Los Angeles County Medical Assn. Auxiliary, Metropolitan District, hopes the net is more than $25,000.

The invitations show Rabbi Jacob and Marjorie Pressman on the cover of Time. The date is Dec. 9. And, in the 50th year of Temple Beth Am, there’s going to be a jubilee Monday evening at the Beverly Hilton.

They’re calling it “Pressman Chronicles,” and Monty Hall will be master of ceremonies in this dinner party salute to the Pressmans’ 35 years of spiritual leadership in the temple. He’s about to become rabbi emeritus.
