Seahawks Win, 31-13, Stay Alive

It’s been and up-and-down season for Dave Krieg, and Sunday the quarterback of the Seattle Seahawks was on a high.

Krieg passed for four touchdowns and the Seahawks kept their playoff hopes alive with a 31-13 victory over the Cleveland Browns.

“That’s just the way it’s been and I guess that’s just the way it is,” Krieg said. “I’d really like to know the reason but it’s just something that I really can’t explain.”

“Everything just went well today. The offensive line did a heck of a job, and I didn’t throw an interception. We just executed better as a team.”

Krieg completed 24 of 34 passes for 268 yards and teamed with Daryl Turner for touchdowns of 8 and 15 yards. He also threw a four-yard scoring pass to tight end Dan Ross and a nine-yard scoring pass to Steve Largent, boosting his season total to 26 touchdown passes.

The loss snapped Cleveland’s three-game winning streak and dropped the Browns (7-7) into a tie for first place in the AFC Central with Cincinnati.

“We’re still in position to control our own destiny, though,” Coach Marty Schottenheimer said. “It’s been an up-and-down division all year, and I don’t see that changing now.”

With nine-year veteran quarterback Gary Danielson on the bench with an ailing shoulder, rookie Bernie Kosar fumbled twice and failed to engineer a touchdown until he hit Glen Young on a 45-yard scoring pass play with 2:54 left. Cleveland’s other scoring came on two field goals by Matt Bahr.

Cleveland’s Clarence Weathers, a three-year wide receiver from Delaware State, was carried off field midway through the third quarter after he taking a hard hit from cornerback Dave Brown on a pass attempt by Kosar. Weathers lay face down on the turf for about 10 minutes.

Cleveland Coach Marty Schottenheimer said Weathers had a shoulder separation and either a bruise or sprain in his neck. Brown’s hit drew a 15-yard penalty for a personal foul. Weathers was in the Browns’ training room after the game.

Seattle played without strong safety Kenny Easley, who suffered a sprained ankle last week while returning a punt. He’s expected to face the Raiders Sunday at the Coliseum.
