The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors moved to have a Los Angeles-based black fund-raising group revise its application to build a retreat and youth camp at Crestline in the San Bernardino Mountains. The Brotherhood Crusade’s application was denied Oct. 10 by the San Bernardino County Planning Commission when neighbors of the proposed site objected that the retreat would create excessive noise in the residential mountain area populated mostly by retirees in mobile homes. U.S. Department of Justice officials have agreed to mediate negotiations toward a revised application because of contentions that the objections are racially motivated.
