A newspaper investigation of alleged recruiting violations at Texas A&M; contained “numerous errors,” university officials said, and football Coach Jackie Sherrill planned “one all-encompassing media response” for today but canceled the news conference.

The Dallas Times Herald, in a copyright series of articles, reported that dozens of former Texas A&M; University football players have told of thousands of dollars, primarily from alumni, paid to top Aggie players in car deals, weekly allowances, performance payments, signing incentives and bonuses in violation of National Collegiate Athletic Assn. recruiting rules.

University officials contended that sources used by the newspaper had “axes to grind,” namely former players who had been dismissed from the team for a variety of reasons.
