If the San Francisco 49ers are going to make it into the National Football League playoffs, they’ll have to do it without the efforts of running back Wendell Tyler.

Tyler, who has run for 867 yards this season and set a club record when he rushed for 1,262 yards last season, will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee today and will miss the last two games of the regular season.

But he would be eligible for postseason games if the 49ers make the playoffs. His right knee has been bothering him for more than a month, and he missed the 49er game at Denver Nov. 11.

Team doctors recommended on Tuesday that Tyler undergo the surgery. On Monday night, Tyler carried 9 times for 43 yards in the 49ers’ 27-20 loss to the Rams.

Before last year’s record-setting performance, Tyler had two 1,000-yard seasons with the Rams. His career rushing total is 6,251 yards in nine seasons.

Another San Francisco running back, Bill Ring, is eligible to come off the injured reserve list this week.
