Whittier : City Hydrants Turning Blue
The city is painting its fire hydrants blue to help identify whose hydrants are whose.
Because several major streets, including Whittier Boulevard, wind in and out of the city limits, Whittier officials wanted to make it easier to identify city hydrants when repairs or maintenance are needed.
Crews are repainting about 925 silver hydrants, a task that should be completed by the end of December.
“This way if someone calls and reports a leaking hydrant or reports a hydrant has been knocked over, we can immediately tell if it is one of ours,” said Manny Magana, the city’s water distribution superintendent.
The city also has placed blue reflectors on streets to mark the locations of hydrants. The markers are placed slightly off-center on the streets, indicating which side a hydrant is located.
