The NFL has ruled that the St. Louis Cardinals cannot wear all-maroon socks, calling them an eyesore and a violation of the league’s standard uniform code.

“I’m just grateful the league stepped in,” wide receiver Pat Tilley said. “They were the ugliest things I’ve ever seen.”

Irritated because many players had been using white tape to cover most of the red in the old half-maroon, half-white socks, team owner Bill Bidwill ordered the new socks for last Sunday’s game against New Orleans.

Some players further risked Bidwill’s ire by putting white tape over the lower portion of the new socks.

Not to be outdone, Bidwill had planned to have the equipment staff issue only maroon-colored tape to the players before Sunday’s game against the Rams at Anaheim.
