Roosevelt Snipes, a former Florida State running back who signed a contract with the San Francisco 49ers last month, has been released from jail in West Palm Beach, Fla., on cocaine charges, placed in the custody of his father and ordered to re-enter the drug institute where he had been receiving treatment.
A judge said that if Snipes does not seek treatment or employment, he will go back to jail. Snipes had been sent to jail by another judge because he apparently lied about having a pass to leave Palm Beach Institute, the drug treatment center.
Snipes was arrested Dec. 6 on charges of selling cocaine to an undercover police officer and resisting arrest.
Snipes was selected by the 49ers in the eighth round of the supplemental draft in July. He rushed for 1,400 yards while playing for the Seminoles in 1983 and 1984 and averaged 6.5 yards a carry.
