A bookmaking ring that stretched from Los Angeles to San Diego and took in $1.5 million a week in bets was broken up with the arrests of three people in Los Angeles and two in San Diego, Los Angeles police said. The arrests by the LAPD culminated a three-month investigation that began with a tip to police at the start of the professional football season, said Sgt. Ron Roddy, head of the West Los Angeles vice squad. Officers who served search warrants at five different locations answered telephones in those offices and in a short time had taken $450,000 in bets, Roddy said. The alleged ringleader, John Adams, 67, has an arrest record for bookmaking dating back to 1940, Roddy said. Also arrested in Los Angeles were Nancy Daley, 49, of Encinitas, and Georgiana Horvath, 68, of Hollywood. Arrested in San Diego were Kevin Harkens, 21, and Susan Hayashi, 28, both of San Diego, San Diego County sheriff’s deputies said.
