A 67-year-old man died, apparently of a heart attack, after being stopped Tuesday for running a stop sign in Van Nuys, authorities said.

A coronor’s spokesman said the motorist, Leoncio Vicende, died at Northridge Hospital Medical Center at 2:25 p.m.

Los Angeles police Lt. Charles Higbie said Officer Russell K. Ball stopped Vicende about 1:30 p.m. after seeing his car go through a stop sign at Amestoy Avenue and Cantara Street.

Ball gave Vicende a warning. As Ball was walking back to his patrol car, Higbie said, the officer heard Vicende’s wife scream and went back to the car.

Ball and the wife administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation before Vicende was taken to the hospital by paramedics, Higbie said.
