Classroom Funds Sought From State by L.B. District

The Long Beach Unified School district has initiated an application for state funding to deal with a shortage of classrooms projected for 1987.

If approved by the state, the application to the state Allocation Board would provide money to by emergency portable classrooms, reconstruct and modernize existing facilities that are more than 30 years old and in some cases construct new facilities.

School officials have projected an enrollment of 69,000 students by the fall of 1987, 5,000 more than are currently enrolled. Present facilites can accomodate about 67,000 without going to a year-round program, officials said. State funding for the expansion of facilities, they said, is awarded according to a formula based on a school district’s need.
