College Basketball Roundup : N.C. State Is 77-64 Winner

North Carolina State, dominating inside behind the play of 6-11 Chris Washburn and 6-10 Charles Shackelford, rolled to a 77-64 victory over Wake Forest at Raleigh, N.C., Thursday night in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both teams.

Washburn, a sophomore, had 22 points and 12 rebounds, and Shackelford, the North Carolina Prep Player of the Year last season, added 17 points and 8 rebounds.

“This was Chris’ best pressure game,” N.C. State Coacb Jim Valvano said. “His decisions were better; his judgment was better.”

Both teams are 4-3.

DePaul 70, Northwestern 67--Freshman Rod Strickland, the MVP in last spring’s Dapper Dan Game at Pittsburgh, scored 8 of his 17 points in the final seven minutes at Evanston, Ill. to help the Blue Demons remain unbeaten. DePaul (6-0) has won the last 10 games in the series. Northwestern is 5-3.

Ohio State 80, Dayton 73--Dennis Hopson, who came into the game leading the NCAA Division I in scoring with a 28.3-points-a-game average, finished with 23 as the Buckeyes (6-1) came from behind in the second half to win at Columbus, Ohio, in the first meeting of the teams in 52 years. Dave Colbert had 28 points for Dayton.

Tulsa 63, Oral Roberts 47--Tulsa held the Titans to a record-low 14 points in the first half while building a 34-14 edge and coasted to the victory at home.

Washington 74, BYU 68--Center Chris Welp scored 21 of his career high 26 points in the second half at Seattle as the Huskies improved their record to 6-2. Jeff Chatman led BYU (2-6) with 20.
