Boys’ Basketball Roundup : Poor Last Half Costs San Dieguito

The San Dieguito Mustangs had a forgettable second half from the field on their home court and it cost them Friday night in a consolation game of the Lt. James Mitchell Tournament.

Leading 28-25 at the half against San Clemente, the Mustangs connected on just 3 of 29 shots from the field and scored just nine points after the intermission. San Clemente took advantage of San Dieguito’s cold spell to post a 49-37 victory.

San Dieguito, which had lost to Orange Glen, 53-48, Thursday night in a tournamentquarterfinal game, was led by Paul Noble who scored 14 points.

Elsewhere in the Mitchell Tournament, top-ranked Poway High improved its record to 7-0 with an 80-55 victory over Orange Glen. The Titans will face El Camino High in tonight’s final. El Camino downed Hoover (Glendale), 72-41.

Other Mitchell Tournament action saw:

Fallbrook 71, Vista 60--Jeff Work and Paul Dixon scored 16 points apiece to lead the Warriors past the Panthers and into the consolation final against Newport Harbor. Fallbrook opened a 39-23 lead at halftime and held on despite a game-high 18 points by Vista’s Matt Hammond.

Newport Harbor 49, Yuma 44--Maurice Lee led Newport Harbor with 10 points. Andy Chavez paced Yuma with 16 points.

In the Metro Conference:

Hilltop 65, Southwest 32--David Mossman scored 14 points and Bill Massicot added 12 as Hilltop had no trouble running its conference record to 2-0 and overall mark to 4-4 in a game played at Southwest. The Lancers led 16-8 after one quarter, 28-17 at halftime and 42-19 after three quarters. Southwest, which failed to put a player in double figures, fell to 0-2 and 0-9.

Bonita Vista 62, Marian 59--Bonita Vista (2-0, 4-1) survived Marian’s fourth-quarter rally to gain the victory at Marian High. Bonita Vista entered the fourth quarter leading, 51-43, but Marian (0-2, 1-4) twice pulled to within two points.

Kip Korzep led Bonita Vista with 16 points. Doug Piper added 15 points and David Woodhouse had 13. Marian’s Chris Hazeltine led all scorers with 19 points. Ricky Millan added 15 and Mark Cisneros had 11. Bonita Vista led at halftime, 37-28.

Sweetwater 102, Mar Vista 62--Mahlon Williams, who has averaged over 29 points-per-game in his last three games, scored 27 points to lead Sweetwater (2-0, 6-3) to the win at home. Sean Styles added 18 points for Sweetwater and Brett Lawrence had 16.

Mar Vista (0-2, 0-5) stayed close for a quarter, 23-20, but wasoutscored 26-10 as Sweetwater took a 49-30 lead at intermission. Mar Vista’s Jim McClusky led all scorers with 29 points in a losing cause.

Castle Park 68, Chula Vista--Castle Park improved its season record to 5-0 and ran its conference mark to 2-0 with a come-from-behind win at Chula Vista. Javier Nunez scored 16 points, Brian Cauley had 13 and John Stanton added 12 as the Trojans rallied from a 40-35 halftime deficit. Castle Park was still down, 47-46, after three quarters, but took the lead at the beginning of the final quarter. Joe Klancher scored 20 points for Chula Vista (1-1 and 3-5) and Jeff Knight had 18.

In nonleague games:

University 43, Crawford 34--A 21-point effort by Sean Giles enabled University (3-2) to pull a mild upset at home by handing Crawford (3-1) its first loss of the season in a game that was called when a fight broke out with 24 seconds left. The game was tied at 28 after three quarters, before University pulled away. James Wilson scored 13 points for University, and Kevin Williams scored 12 for Crawford.
