BRIEFLY : ‘White Lightning’ Aims for Second Title Shot

Share

Continuing his bid for a second shot at the world lightweight title, Charlie “White Lightning” Brown of North Hollywood will meet undefeated Greg Haugen of Seattle, Wash., in a 10-round fight Jan. 3 at the Showboat Hotel in Las Vegas.

The bout will be televised on ESPN. Brown is 26-2 with 19 knockouts. Haugen is 14-0-1.

A victory could vault Brown into the top 10 among challengers to the lightweight crown, according to his manager, Dan Goossen.

“A win would put him right in the thick of things,” Goossen said. “If it didn’t put him in the top 10, it would put him right on the doorstep.”

Brown fought for the lightweight title in 1984, losing to Harry Arroyo.

In another fight involving a boxer from the Ten Goose gym in North Hollywood, Walter Sims (17-2-2) will meet lightweight contender Robert Mayweather in a 10-round bout Jan. 15 at the Sahara Hotel in Las Vegas.

“We’re the underdog in both of these fights,” Goossen said.

On a local fight card, either Michael Nunn, a highly-touted middleweight boxer out of the Goossen stable, or bantamweight Frankie Duarte will headline the Jan. 28 card at the Country Club in Reseda, Goossen said.
