Boys’ Roundup : Mira Mesa Rallies to Beat Mt. Carmel

Mt. Carmel High School took two shots in the final nine seconds but missed both and lost, 61-60, to Mira Mesa Thursday in the opening round of the Unlimited Division at the 39th annual Kiwanis Tournament.

Playing at Helix, Mira Mesa (6-1) rallied from a nine-point deficit in the third quarter to lead, 59-58, with 30 seconds to play. Scott Cummings then scored to put the Marauders ahead, 61-58.

Mt. Carmel scored to pull within one, then took the ball back on a Mira Mesa turnover with nine seconds left. The Sundevils missed two shots before the Marauders cleared the ball away.

Bill Lee and Sean Carter each scored 11 points to lead Mira Mesa. Mt. Carmel’s Scott Boggins scored a game-high 26.

In other Unlimited Division play:

Western (Las Vegas) 84, Madison 78--Eric White scored 22 points and Tony Johnson and John Hines added 18 each to lead the winners. Eric Jackson scored 20 to lead Madison (3-2), Jimmy Dean added 19, DaRell Watson 12 and Todd Lance 10. Western built a 66-55 lead after three quarters before having to withstand a Madison rally in the final eight minutes.

Patrick Henry 76, Monte Vista 47--Ron Young scored 26 points and grabbed 8 rebounds as the Patriots (1-2) won at Helix. Patrick Henry led, 36-27, at halftime, and continued building on that margin in the second half. Myron Mitchell added 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Patriots.

Limited Division (Championship bracket)

University 66, University City 37--The Dons led, 32-15, at halftime and coasted to victory at Hoover. Sean Giles of University led all scorers with 16 points, while teammates James Wilson and Eric Bockstahler added 14 apiece. Kendall Lavender led University City with 12 points. University (4-3) evened its tournament record at 1-1, and UC fell to 0-2.

Valhalla 51, San Pasqual 48--The Norsemen (2-4) moved to 2-0 in the tournament with their narrow win at Hoover. Valhalla trailed, 35-33, after three quarters, then led by as many as five points down the stretch. In the final minute, Troy Toolson made two free throws and Robert Tubman made one to secure Valhalla’s win. Toolson, Dominic Taitano and Brian Dindinger scored 11 points apiece for the Norsemen. San Pasqual (4-3), which dropped to 1-1 in tournament play, was led by Bill Prucinski with 17 points and Jeff Baglio with 14.

Serra 68, Bonita Vista 53--The Conquistadors (8-1) led, 18-12, after one quarter and continued to expand their lead over the Barons (5-2) throughout the game at Serra. Steve Smith and Deven Moran scored 20 points apiece for Serra, which is 2-0 in the tournament, while Anthony Moore added 17. Bonita Vista, 1-1 in tournament action, was led by Kip Korzep’s 18 points.

Hoover 65, Hilltop 56--Trailing 40-39 after three quarters, Hoover (5-5) broke open a close game by scoring 26 points in the final period at Hoover. Tyrone Bell scored a game-high 27 points to lead the winners. Hoover also received 12 points each from Brian Angelo and Michael Walker, and 10 points from Adel Rammal. James McCurty scored 18 for Hilltop (4-6) and David Mossman added 15. It was Hoover’s second win over Hilltop this season.

Crawford 55, Mission Bay 41--The Colts outscored the Buccaneers, 23-15, in the fourth quarter to break open a close game and beat Mission Bay for the second time this season at Serra High School. Crawford, 1-1 in the tournament, was led by Joe Hicks with 19 points and Dondi Bell with 16. Dwain Smith scored 16 to pace Mission Bay (0-5), which fell to 0-2 in tournament play.

Classified Division

Castle Park 72, Victoria (Canada) 69--A basket by Javier Nunez with one minute to play put Castle Park ahead to stay as the Trojans improved their record to 6-0 in a first round game played at San Diego High School. John Stanton scored 19 points to lead the Trojans, who trailed 52-49 entering the final quarter. Nunez scored 17 and Brian Cauley added 13 for the winners.

Ramona 80, St. Augustine 56--Mike Pendell scored 19 points to lead Ramona in another first round game at San Diego High. Craig Stoker scored 11 and John Schweitzer and Stan Clancy added 10 each as the Bulldogs won their fourth straight after opening the season with three losses. Joe Sandley scored 18 for St. Augustine, Charlie Applegate had 16, and Tony Evenson added 10.
