College Basketball Roundup : Wildcats Win Battle of Kentucky by Beating Louisville, 69-64

Winston Bennett scored a career-high 23 points to lead 13th-ranked Kentucky to a 69-64 victory over No. 15 Louisville Saturday at Lexington, Ky.

Bennett, a native of Louisville, hit 8 of 13 shots from the field and grabbed seven rebounds.

Eddie Sutton, Kentucky’s first-year coach who has yet to lose in six games at Rupp Arena, said: “In my opinion, this is the best nonconference game in the country. The guys were telling me, ‘Coach, this game is big--bragging rights.’ ”

Louisville Coach Denny Crum wasn’t pleased with the officiating as his Cardinals were called for 22 fouls to Kentucky’s 12.

“They went to the free-throw line 18 more times than we did, but that is better than it was the last time we were here,” he said. “I wish I had a whistle. I would have called some of them differently, but I am prejudiced. They called them the way they saw them, but I don’t have to agree.”

Kentucky improved to 8-1 with its third straight victory, while Louisville fell to 6-3. Kentucky leads the intrastate series, 12-5, including three wins in the last four meetings.

Louisville, after trailing, 33-30, at the half, pulled even at 50-50 on forward Herbert Crook’s baseline jumper with 8:11 left. The Wildcats then went on a 9-2 tear to open up a 59-52 lead with 4:26 to go.

Michigan 85, Illinois Chicago 54--Roy Tarpley paced a balanced scoring attack with 16 points as Michigan (11-0) won at Ann Arbor, Mich., to tie a 67-year-old school record for most consecutive season-opening victories. The mark was set by the 1918-19 Wolverines.

Duke 88, Appalachian St. 46--Johnny Dawkins scored 16 points and Mark Alarie added 13 to lead third-ranked Duke (10-0) to a victory over Appalachian State (6-3) at Durham, N.C.

BYU 88, Weber St. 86 (OT)--Brent Stephenson scored on a layup with three seconds left in overtime to give the Cougars (3-7) a nonconference victory over previously unbeaten Weber State (10-1) at Provo, Utah.

Jeff Chatman led BYU with 24 points, while Weber State’s Walt Tyler led all scorers with 32 points.

Utah 61, Utah St. 56--Jerry Stroman scored 21 points as Utah (8-3) beat Utah State (4-5) in a nonconference game at Logan, Utah. Utah shot 27% in the first half, 63% in the second.

Pacific 64, St. Mary’s 60--Forward Rich Anema scored 14 points and guard Chris Gray added 13 to lead Pacific (7-4) over St. Mary’s (5-5) at Moraga, Calif.

Minnesota 110, Alcorn St. 72--John Shasky, a 7-foot center, scored 21 points and Marc Wilson had 19 as Minnesota (10-3) overwhelmed Alcorn State (1-7) at Minneapolis.

TOURNAMENTS All College

Oklahoma 92, SMU 69--Junior guard Tim McCalister scored 29 points, mostly on soft, long-range jumpers, as the No. 8 Sooners won the championship game of the 50th annual All College tournament at Oklahoma City.

The Sooners (11-0) are off to their best start since winning 18 straight to open the 1927 season. They became the first team in 40 years to claim three straight All College titles.

Darryl Kennedy scored 27 points for the Sooners and Anthony Bowie had 18. Kevin Lewis scored 21 points for SMU (8-2).

Cotton States

Georgia Tech 82, Navy 64--Mark Price scored 23 points and John Salley added 20 to lead seventh-ranked Georgia Tech (9-1) over Navy (9-3) in the championship game of the Cotton States tournament at Atlanta.

In the consolation game, Dallas Comegys scored 16 points, including 13 in the second half, as No. 20 DePaul defeated Texas, 63-62. DePaul (7-3) snapped a three-game losing streak. Texas fell to 5-6.

Dayton

Dayton 59, California 53--Dave Colbert scored 21 points, including four free throws in overtime, to lead Dayton past California in the championship game of the Dayton Invitational at Dayton, Ohio. Colbert also grabbed 15 rebounds.

Dayton (6-3) scored 8 of its 10 overtime points from the foul line, including four by Dan Christie. Kevin Johnson scored 16 points for Cal (7-2).

ECAC Holiday Festival

St. John’s 85, St. Bonaventure 69--Walter Berry scored 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds at Madison Square Garden to lead No. 11 St. John’s to its 10th consecutive victory and second straight ECAC Holiday Festival championship.

Berry hit 11 of 15 field-goal attempts and was named most valuable player of the tournament. Mark Jackson and Ron Rowan each added 18 for the Redmen (12-1).

The Bonnies (6-3), who had trailed by as many as 21 points, twice rallied to within eight points late in the contest before the Redmen pulled away again.

In the consolation game, Richie Simmonds scored 10 of his 16 points in the second half to lead Iona to a 57-54 comeback victory over James Madison.

Far West

St. Joseph’s 64, Oregon St. 46--Maurice Martin scored 17 points as St. Joseph’s (4-2) eliminated host Oregon State in a semifinal game of the Fred Meyer Far West tournament at Corvallis, Ore.

The Beavers, the tournament’s two-time defending champions, were without starting guard Darrin Houston and reserve forward Mark Kaska. Both were declared academically ineligible earlier Saturday.

Jose Ortiz scored 12 points to lead the Beavers (4-4).

In the other semifinal, Iowa defeated Boston University, 76-71. Iowa faces St. Joseph’s in the final tonight.

Earlier Saturday, Tampa beat Oregon, 72-61, and Kansas State defeated Tennessee Tech, 89-61, in the consolation semifinals.

Fiesta Bowl

Arizona 71, Boston College 61--Craig McMillan scored 22 points to lead Arizona (7-4) to a victory in the championship game of the Fiesta Bowl tournament at Tucson. Steve Kerr added 16 points for the Wildcats. Boston College is now 8-2.

In the consolation game, Princeton upset Wisconsin, 54-49.

Holiday Bowl

Memphis St. 106, N.C.-Charlotte 82--Dwight Boyd scored 17 points as No. 10-ranked Memphis State (11-0) defeated North Carolina-Charlotte (4-5) in the championship game of the Holiday Bowl tournament at San Diego.

In the consolation game, center Brian Sloane scored 23 points to lead Fresno State (7-4) over San Diego State (1-9).

Hoosier

Indiana 74, Mississippi St. 43--Daryl Thomas scored 18 points and freshman Ricky Calloway added 16 to lead 17th-ranked Indiana in the championship game of the Hoosier tournament at Indianapolis. Steve Alford had 14 points for the Hoosiers (8-2). Mississippi State is now 3-6.

In the consolation game, Reggie Owens scored 19 points and Rick Berry grabbed 13 rebounds to lead San Jose State (6-2) to a 70-67 victory over Idaho (4-6). Idaho’s Ken Luckett scored a tournament record 31 points.

Kansas Holiday

Kansas 81, Wichita St. 56--Ron Kellogg scored 22 points as the sixth-ranked Jayhawks (11-1) won the championship game of the Holiday tournament at Kansas City. Wichita State is now 6-3.

In the consolation game, Louis Cook scored six points in overtime to lead Louisiana Tech over Arizona State, 87-86. Willie Bland led Louisiana Tech (6-3) with 18 points, while Eric Holloway led Arizona State (6-4) with 26.

Lobo

Michigan State 76, New Mexico 61--Guard Scott Skiles scored 25 points to lead the Spartans (9-1) won the championship game of the Lobo Invitational at Albuquerque, N.M. New Mexico (8-3) lost for the first time at home this season.

Music City

Iowa St. 80, Vanderbilt 79--Jeff Grayer scored 33 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Cyclones (9-2) in the championship game of the Music City Invitational at Nashville, Tenn. Vanderbilt (6-3) had won its last five games. Iowa State trailed, 56-45, with 16:20 left to play.

In the third-place game, Davidson (7-3) recorded a 70-47 victory over Rice (6-4).

Orange Bowl

North Carolina 115, Brown 63--Brad Daugherty hit 11 of 16 field-goal attempts and scored 26 points as the top-ranked Tar Heels (12-0) routed Brown (3-5) in the championship game of the Orange Bowl tournament at Miami.

Dave Popson added 16 points for the Tar Heels, who won their two games in the tournament by a combined 136 points. They beat Manhattan, 129-45, Friday night.

Sugar Bowl

Pittsburgh 77, SW Louisiana 52--Demetreus Gore scored 20 points, Curtis Aiken 16 and Charles 13 as the Panthers (8-2) won the championship game of the Sugar Bowl tournament at New Orleans. Southwestern Louisiana is 6-5.

Earlier, Tennessee beat Texas A&M;, 70-64, in the consolation match.
