A long time coming: Iowa quarterback Chuck Long finished with 29 completions in 37 attempts for 319 yards passing, which isn’t bad considering that he didn’t complete his first pass, an 11-yarder to Bill Happel, until 3:06 remained in the first quarter.

How bad a day did Iowa have? Well, consider that Iowa ranked fifth in the nation in total defense entering the game and that its defense had given up an average of 13 points a game. In case you didn’t notice, UCLA had 488 yards in total offense and 45 points.

How good a day did UCLA have? Said Hayden Fry, Iowa’s coach: “If they played all season the way they played tonight, they’d be national champions. There’s no question in my mind.”

How long a day was it, Chuck? “I thought it was a dream,” the Iowa quarterback said. “I didn’t think it was happening. I thought we did all the right things. We were relaxed. I was loose. I felt good in warmups. . . . “
