NHL Roundup : Canadiens Upset by Injury-Riddled Leafs, 3-2

For 50 minutes, the Montreal Canadiens played as if they were up against the Soviet Red Army again.

After being beaten, 6-1, by the Soviet national champions Tuesday night, the Canadiens came to life in the final 10 minutes but couldn’t prevent a 3-2 setback to the injury-riddled Toronto Maple Leafs Wednesday night at Toronto.

Gary Leeman’s goal at 18:31 of the first period broke a 1-1 tie and the Maple Leafs made it 3-1 on Russ Courtnall’s goal in the second period.

Larry Robinson scored with 6:52 left for the Canadiens, but it wasn’t enough.

Toronto’s Tom Fergus scored at 14:28 of the opening period, and Montreal tied it on Bobby Smith’s goal 3 1/2 minutes later.

Tim Bernhardt, in his first appearance since injuring his knee in November, made 26 saves for Toronto.

Regulars missing from the Leaf lineup with injuries were forwards Rick Vaive, Wendel Clark, Greg Terrion, Gary McAdam and Marian Stastny and defensemen Borje Salming and Brad Maxwell.

Washington 3, N.Y. Rangers 0--Center Alan Haworth assisted on three goals and goalie Al Jensen stopped 30 shots at Landover, Md., as the Capitals beat the Rangers for the first time in four games this season.

Jensen’s seventh career shutout, his first of the season, broke Washington’s two-game losing streak.

Haworth triggered Washington’s first goal, 7:03 into the game, when he passed to Scott Stevens at the left point. Jorgen Pettersson deflected Stevens’ drive past goalie John Vanbiesbrouck.

Haworth fed Craig Laughlin in the crease for a goal at 1:50 of the second period and set up Kevin Hatcher’s score at 5:46 of the final period.

Chicago 7, Pittsburgh 4--Al Secord and Troy Murray scored three goals each and the Black Hawks moved into a tie with St. Louis for the Norris Division lead with a victory over the Penguins at Chicago.

The victory was Chicago’s seventh in the last eight games and lifted the Black Hawks to the .500 mark at 16-16-4.

It was the third hat trick of Secord’s career and the first for Murray.

Chicago took a 2-0 lead on goals by Murray and Steve Larmer. Pittsburgh’s Norm Schmidt scored to make it 2-1, but Secord got his first goal as Chicago went ahead, 3-1.

The Black Hawks made it 5-2 in the second period on goals by Secord and Murray. Bob Errey scored for the Penguins.

Secord and Murray rounded out the Black Hawks’ scoring in the third period. Schmidt added a second goal in the third period, and Randy Cunneyworth also scored for Pittsburgh.
