College Basketball Roundup : Tar Heels Say Goodby With a 90-79 Win

North Carolina finished its 20-year stay in Carmichael Auditorium the way it started, with a victory.

The No. 1 Tar Heels downed North Carolina State, 90-79, Saturday, marking North Carolina’s final home game in the 10,000-seat structure at Chapel Hill, N.C. The Tar Heels will move to their new 21,000-seat Student Activities Center with a game Jan. 18 against Duke.

The history of the moment was lost on North Carolina center Brad Daugherty, who scored a game-high 28 points.

“I totally forgot this was the last game. I had heard it said so many times, I just forgot,” Daugherty said. “I didn’t realize it until there were just about 10 minutes to go. I think we all forgot.”

The Tar Heels were 169-20 at Carmichael Auditorium.

North Carolina, 14-0 overall and 1-0 in the ACC, failed to be distracted by pregame publicity and proceeded to tear into North Carolina State.

North Carolina State, which had a five-game winning streak snapped, fell to 8-4.

“Coming off those five victories, I thought we could come in here and play well and we did,” said North Carolina State coach Jim Valvano. “What we’ve got to learn is how to handle the runs a good team will make during a ball game. The good teams will come back.”

Valvano made his bid to become an historical footnote by sinking a basket after the game’s conclusion, claiming he had made the last field goal in Carmichael.

Leading 39-36 at halftime, North Carolina broke the game broke open with a 7-0 spurt over a three-minute span in the second half. A jump shot from the key by forward Joe Wolf put the Tar Heels ahead 80-69 with 3:10 to play. North Carolina State never got closer than nine points after that.

Wolf, a 6-10 junior, also grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds for the Tar Heels to help them to a 42-31 edge on the boards.

Center Chris Washburn led North Carolina State with 21 points. Nate McMillan added 16 points while forward Charles Shackleford had 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Memphis State 83, Kansas 80--William Bedford scored 22 points and Andre Turner scored 16 of his 20 points in the second half as Tigers (12-0) stayed unbeaten with an overtime win over the Jayhawks (12-2) at Memphis. Turner keyed a Memphis State comeback with two three-point plays to force the overtime. With the win, Memphis State is off to its best start in 66 years. Calvin Thompson (K) 21; Greg Dreiling (K) 18 and 14 rebounds; Danny Manning (K) 16.

Georgia Tech 64, Virginia 61--Mark Price scored 18 points, including two free throws to cap an 11-0 run for the Yellow Jackets (11-1 and 1-0) in the final minute at Charlottesville, Va. The Cavaliers (8-4 and 0-2) were led by Olden Polynice, who had 17 points and 10 rebounds, and held 7-foot John Salley to six points.

Duke 81, Maryland 75--David Henderson scored 25 points as the Blue Devils (12-0 and 2-0) overcame an early seven-point deficit against the Terps (9-3 and 0-1) at College Park, Md. The Blue Devils broke the game open with a 16-2 run that gave them a 55-38 lead in the second half. Len Byas (M) 28; Johnny Dawkins (D) 21; John Johnson (M) 21; Mark Alarie (D) 17.

Iowa 60, Illinois 59--Freshman Roy Marble hit a free throw with 30 seconds left as the Hawkeyes ended the Illini’s 31-game home-court winning streak at Champaign, Ill. Gerry Wright, who started his collegiate career at USC, scored 18 points as the Hawkeyes raised their record to 11-4 overall and 1-1 in the Big Ten. Illinois, led by Anthony Welch with 23 points, fell to 10-3 and 1-1. Welch missed a 15-footer with five seconds left and Iowa got the game-clinching rebound.

Purdue 68, Minnesota 61--Todd Mitchell scored 18 points and Troy Lewis added 17 points, 15 in the second half, at West Lafayette, Ind. as the Boilermakers (13-2 and 2-0) won their eighth straight game. Marc Wilson had 16 points for the Gophers (10-5 and 0-2).

Michigan 78, Ohio State 68--Surviving another big test on the road, the Wolverines (14-0 and 2-0) put the Buckeyes away by storming to a 48-29 lead in the second half at Columbus, Ohio. Gary Grant scored 19 of his 23 points in the second half for the Wolverines who were coming off a road win against Indiana Thursday night. Brad Sellers (OS) 25 and 15 rebounds; Richard Rellford (M) 18.

St. John’s 78, Pittsburgh 75--Walter Berry scored 26 points and Shelton Jones scored six of his 10 points in overtime as the Redmen turned back the Panthers at New York. It was the 12th straight win for the Redmen, who are 14-1 overall 2-0 in the Big East. Pitt (9-3 and 1-1) was coming off an upset win over Georgetown. Syracuse 96, Seton Hall 75--Two steals by Dwayne Washington keyed a 17-2 run that gave the Orangemen (10-0 and 2-0) a 43-28 lead just before the half at Syracuse. Seton Hall fell to 9-6 and 0-2. Rafael Addison (S) 19; Andre McCloud (SH) 17; Wendell Alexis (S) 16.

Georgetown 110, Providence 79--After two straight road losses, the Hoyas (10-2 and 1-1) took a 55-43 halftime lead and then broke it open with eight straight points early in the second half at Landover, Md. Providence is 8-4 and 0-2. Reggie Williams (G) 23; Billy Donovan (P) 21; Michael Jackson (G) 16; Jaren Jackson (G) 16.

TCU 71, Arkansas 62--Jamie Dixon came off the bench to score 21 points at Fort Worth as the Horned Frogs (10-3 and 2-0 in the Southwest Conference) made it two straight wins over the Razorbacks (8-4 and 0-2). TCU had a 25-9 rebounding edge on the offensive boards.

Texas Tech 69, Houston 68--Tony Benford scored 20 points, including a turnaround jumper at the buzzer in overtime as the Red Raiders (6-6 and 1-0) successfully opened defense of their Southwest Conference title at Houston. Houston dropped to 6-6 and 0-2.

Kentucky 80, Vanderbilt 71--Kenny Walker scored 25 points and Ed Davender added 19 as the Wildcats (10-1 and 1-0) won their Southeastern Conference opener at Nashville. Winston Bennett had 16 points and 14 rebounds for Kentucky which built a 43-28 halftime lead over Vanderbilt (7-4 and 1-1).

LSU 90, Mississippi State 84--John Williams scored 29 points and Nikita Wilson had 16 points and 12 rebounds at Baton Rouge as the Tigers (14-0 and 2-0) matched the best start in their history. They also were 14-0 in 1922. Mississippi State is 3-8 and 0-2. Greg Lockhart (MS) 26 (11 of 16 shots).

San Diego State 72, Colorado State 56--Freshman guard Daryl Gaines, son of head coach David (Smokey) Gaines, came off the bench to score 14 points at San Diego as the Aztecs (3-9 and 2-0) won their second straight Western Athletic Conference game. Colorado State is 5-8 and 1-1. Rich Strong (CS) 17 and 11 rebounds; Anthony Watson (SDS) 16.

U. San Diego 82, St. Ambrose (Iowa) 55--Pete Murphy scored 16 points and Scott Thompson added 15 for the as the Toreros (9-4) turned back the Fighting Bees (5-8) at San Diego.
