College Basketball Roundup : Michigan State Hands Indiana Another Big Ten Loss at Home
Senior forward Larry Polec made four free throws in the last 23 seconds and Michigan State held off 15th-ranked Indiana, 77-74, Sunday in a Big Ten game at Bloomington, Ind.
It was the seventh consecutive Big Ten defeat at home for Indiana dating back to last season.
The Spartans (10-2 overall, 1-1 in conference play) increased a 39-37 halftime lead to 57-42 with 14:44 left. Indiana (8-4, 0-2) stormed back with a 22-9 surge over the next 10 minutes and tied the game, 70-70, on junior guard Steve Alford’s three-point play with 1:35 remaining.
Sophomore forward Carlton Valentine, who scored 21 points for the Spartans, made two free throws to put Michigan State back into the lead, and the Spartans made five more free throws in the last 23 seconds.
Alford scored 23 points, including 17 in the second half. Freshman guard Rick Calloway added 20 for the Hoosiers.
Senior guard Scott Skiles had 20 for Michigan State and Polec finished with 18.
Marquette 72, Chicago Loyola 70--Kerry Trotter scored 14 points, including two free throws with five seconds left, to give the Warriors a come-from-behind victory at Rosemont, Ill.
David Boone scored 16 of his 24 points in the second half as Marquette (7-4) erased a 20-point deficit.
Marquette caught the Ramblers (3-9) when Benny Moore hit a short jump shot with 3:28 left.
