College Basketball Roundup : Person Leads Auburn Upset of Kentucky

Chuck Person scored 24 points and Gerald White hit four crucial free throws in the final minute after Auburn had blown most of a 16-point lead as the Tigers upset 11th-ranked Kentucky, 60-56, Monday night in a Southeastern Conference basketball game at Auburn, Ala.

The Wildcats (10-2 overall, 1-1 in the SEC) rallied from a 40-24 deficit with 17:30 remaining with a smothering full-court press.

Kentucky scored 10 straight points--eight by Kenny Walker--to pull within 54-52 with 1:22 left when Walker hit a jumper from the lane for the last of his 22 points.

White made two free throws with 52 seconds left and Jeff Moore followed with two more with 40 seconds to play as Auburn (7-5, 1-1) rebuilt the lead to 58-52.

James Blackmon scored for Kentucky with 14 seconds left, but White closed the door with two more free throws two seconds later. Ed Davender scored for Kentucky at the buzzer.

Syracuse 80, Villanova 57--Senior forward Rafael Addison scored 25 points as the fourth-ranked Orangemen trounced the defending national champion Wildcats in a Big East game at Philadelphia.

The Orangemen (11-0, 3-0) blew open a 31-26 halftime lead by making 7 of 9 shots to open the second half and led, 47-30, on a layup by Addison with 13:43 left.

Villanova (9-7, 1-1) scored six straight points to climb back to within 53-43, but the Wildcats turned the ball over with a chance to get closer. Syracuse scored six of the next eight points and pulled away.

Alabama Birmingham 57, South Florida 46--Archie Johnson scored 13 points and Steve Mitchell added 12 as the No. 14 Blazers shut down the Bulls in a Sun Belt Conference game at Tampa, Fla..

The Jaguars (14-2, 2-0) limited South Florida (7-5, 0-1) to 30% shooting on 21 of 71 shots.

Alabama Birmingham used a tight man-to-man defense in jumping to a 27-19 halftime lead. The Blazers built their lead to 12 points midway through the second half and were never threatened.

Kansas 60, Detroit 51--Ron Kellogg scored 13 points and the ninth-ranked Jayhawks pulled away in the final six minutes to beat to the Titans at Detroit.

The Jayhawks (13-2) seemed in control, leading, 35-28, with 16:58 left when Detroit (6-8) rallied and built a 40-37 lead on Kevin McAdoo’s layup with 11:34 left.

Kansas went ahead to stay, 46-44, on two free throws by Archie Marshall with 6:11 left and regained control with solid free-throw shooting down the stretch.

The Jayhawks made 22 of 26 free-throw attempts, 9 of 10 by Kellogg.

Clemson 91, Wake Forest 64--Anthony Jenkins scored 14 points in the first half as the Tigers cruised past the Demon Deacons in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Clemson.

The victory was the 200th for Coach Cliff Ellis.

Jenkins, who sat out last season with an injury after starting as a sophomore, finished with 18 points, and forward Horace Grant added 18 and eight rebounds for Clemson (13-1, 1-0). Larry Middleton scored 14 points, and center Glen McCants had 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Rod Watson had 20 points for Wake Forest (6-7, 0-2).

Louisville 86, E. Kentucky 55--Billy Thompson scored 19 points and Milt Wagner added 17 as the 17th-ranked Cardinals routed the Colonels at Louisville, Ky.

The Cardinals (7-3) led, 49-41, with 18:06 left in the game when they pulled away with a 17-6 surge that built a 66-47 lead. Wagner had nine of his points during the run.

Lewis Spence had 21 points for Eastern (3-7).

Memphis State 89, South Carolina 81--Sophomore guard Vincent Askew scored 23 points and the sixth-ranked Tigers beat the Gamecocks in a Metro Conference game at Memphis, Tenn.

The Tigers (13-0, 1-0) stretched their home-court victory streak to 29 games by winning for the 14th straight time in conference play.

William Bedford added 19 points for Memphis State, and Linwood Moye scored 21 for South Carolina (8-5, 1-1).

California 59, San Francisco 58--Leonard Taylor hit a bank shot with two seconds left at Berkeley as the Golden Bears handed the Dons their ninth straight defeat.

The Bears (10-2), who trailed, 33-23 at halftime, fell behind, 59-56, when Jimmy Giron made a free throw for USF (4-9).

But after Dons’ center Peter Reitz missed the front end of a one-and-one, California guard Chris Washington hit a driving layup with five seconds left and was fouled on the play. Washington’s free-throw attempt to tie the game bounced off the front rim, but Taylor grabbed the rebound and scored the game-winner.

San Jose State 55, Fresno State 52--Ricky Berry and Reggie Owens scored 13 points each as the Spartans turned back the Bulldogs in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game at San Jose.

San Jose State (8-4, 1-2), which led by as many as 14 points early in the second half, survived a Fresno State comeback. The Bulldogs (8-5, 1-1), who played without injured starters Jos Kuipers and Mike Mitchell, ran off eight consecutive points to close the gap to 52-50 with 1:19 left.

San Jose State guard Ontario Johnson made one of two free-throws attempts with 1:16 left, and Mark Gustin sank a pair of free throws with 12 seconds left, bringing the Bulldogs to 53-52. Berry hit teammate Ward Farris with a baseball pass and Farris dunked as time ran out.
