Ventura Gulls Open at Home April 11
The Ventura County Gulls will open their season April 11 at home, California League President Joe Gagliardi said this week.
The Gulls’ 144-game schedule has not yet been completed, Gagliardi said, but he has assured Gull owners Ken McMullen, Jim Colborn and Jim Biby that their team will be home for its opener.
On Tuesday night, Ventura College officially became the Gulls’ home when the Ventura County Community College District Governing Board voted to approve a contract that will allow the Class-A minor league baseball team to play its 72 home games at the college facility during the 1986 season.
The board voted two months ago to approve development of the contract, which will enable the Gulls to play at Ventura College for one season. McMullen’s group hopes to move the team to a permanent site in Camarillo before the 1987 season.
Last month, the Gulls entered into a one-year working agreement with the Toronto Blue Jays, who will provide the team’s manager, coaches and players.
Bob Ezell, bullpen coach for the Texas Rangers last season, will manage the Gulls.
