The New York Giants’ Phil Simms will start at quarterback for the NFC in the Pro Bowl in place of San Francisco’s Joe Montana. Montana, who has appeared in three Pro Bowls, will miss the game because of a shoulder problem, a banged right knee, bruised ribs and an abdominal problem.
Simms, who was selected as the reserve quarterback, will be backed up by Chicago’s Jim McMahon. Simms and McMahon will be making their first Pro Bowl appearances.
Reserve center Doug Smith of the Rams will miss the game because of a nerve problem that has bothered him since late in the regular season. Fred Quillan of the 49ers will take Smith’s place.
