Segota Can Play for Canadian Team

The Sockers will allow midfielder Branko Segota to train with the Canadian National team for two stretches during the current Major Indoor Soccer League regular season.

Segota, second in the MISL in scoring with 24 goals and 19 assists for 43 points, has expressed a desire to play for his country in the World Cup, beginning May 31 in Mexico.

He will miss five games and will probably miss the MISL All-Star game while playing with the Canadian National team from Jan. 26-29 and Feb. 9-19. He will miss games in Kansas City Jan. 28, Tacoma Feb. 9, St. Louis Feb. 16 and home games against Los Angeles Feb. 11 and Kansas City Feb. 14. The All-Star game will be played at Chicago Stadium Feb. 18.

“I feel this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Branko,” Socker owner Bob Bell said. “He could be the most talented player Canada has. The impact on both him and the Canadian World Cup program has put us in the position to be flexible in this regard.”

If Segota is selected to the Canadian National team, he will be faced with another conflict when the team begins full-time training in early May in Colorado Springs. There is a good chance the Sockers will be in the midst of the MISL playoffs at that time.
