L. A. to Rid Its Center in Saugus of Asbestos
The Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday approved spending $130,000 to clean up asbestos that has been exposed because of vandalism at the city’s abandoned alcohol rehabilitation center in Saugus.
City Administrative Officer Keith Comrie recommended the expenditure to protect the city from being sued by trespassers who become ill on the property after exposure to the asbestos.
Asbestos insulation has been scattered on the ground by vandals who have ripped copper piping from the wall, Comrie said.
Mayor Tom Bradley last October proposed that the 520 acres the city owns in Saugus, which includes the abandoned rehabilitation center, be offered to the state for a prison. But there has been no action on his proposal, which stirred outrage among nearby residents and is opposed by Gov. George Deukmejian’s Administration.
