UCI’s Women Swimmers Win First Meet of Season

The UC Irvine women’s swim team won its first meet of the season Saturday afternoon, defeating the University of San Diego, 84-20, at Cal State Long Beach. The women lost the other half of the duel meet to the 49ers, 63-42. After the split, the Anteaters are 1-7.

Junior Jennifer Luhn was the only two-event winner for UCI. She finished first in the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 2:17:06. In the 200-meter breast stroke, her winning time was 2:33:67. Junior Melanie Reed, also from UCI, won the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 25:19.

The UCI men, led by freshman Mauro Macchi, defeated the 49ers’ 75-36 in the same pool. Macchi, a freshman from Italy, won both the 200- and 500-meter freestyle events. The Anteaters finished 1-2 in five events, including the the 50 freestyle, and the 200 butterfly.

Both UCI teams swim again next Saturday against Cal State Northridge in the Matadors’ pool.
