Fire investigators at Elmont, N.Y., inspected the charred remains of a Belmont Park barn searching for clues to a blaze in which 45 thoroughbreds died.

“We are looking at everything that could have started a fire,” said Detective Lt. William Gutersloh, commanding officer of the Nassau County Police Arson Squad. “There is always the possibility that the cause will never be determined.

“We have nothing to indicate there is anything suspicious about the fire. There are no inconsistencies in the reporting of the fire and nothing to indicate that there was any delay in turning in the alarm.”
