A woman was killed and a man was critically injured Saturday morning in a six-car pileup on the Golden State Freeway near Sylmar, the California Highway Patrol said.

The chain-reaction collision began about 10:15 a.m. when a car stalled in traffic and was hit from behind by another car, Officer Manny Avila said. A third car, carrying a man and a woman from Torrance, bounced off the first two cars and was hit broadside by a fourth car, Avila said. The third car then hit two more cars.

The woman in the third car, Jacqueline Kershner, 43, was killed, Avila said. Her companion, whose name was not released, was in critical condition at Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills on Saturday night, a nursing supervisor said.

Another woman was treated at the scene.

Officers issued no citations.

A few hours earlier, a 30-year-old Sylmar man was killed when the car he was driving skidded off a bridge on Henry Mayo Drive near Castaic Canyon Road near Saugus, officers said.

The man, Felipe Ortiz, was driving about 70 m.p.h. when his car crashed through a bridge railing and plunged 26 feet into a riverbed, Avila said.
