Vince Tobin Takes Buddy Ryan’s Old Job With Bears

Vince Tobin, who joined the New Orleans Saints only last Tuesday as defensive coordinator under new Coach Jim Mora, resigned Saturday to replace Buddy Ryan as the defensive coordinator of the Super Bowl champion Chicago Bears.

Bear officials confirmed that Tobin will take over for Ryan, who designed the team’s famed 46 defense.

Ryan left the Bears Wednesday to take the head coaching job with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Tobin, 42, is the younger brother of Bill Tobin, the director of player personnel for the Bears.

Vince Tobin had joined the Saints as one of eight assistants to move with Mora from the Baltimore Stars of the USFL.

Tobin, a Missouri native, was an assistant at the University of Missouri from 1967 through 1976 and then was the defensive coordinator for the British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League before joining the Stars three years ago.
