Seven members of the New England Patriots who tested positively for drug use during the last year will continue to be checked randomly, according to the head of the team’s drug program.

The group includes two players whose tests showed they had been drug-free for six to eight months, said Dr. Armand Nicholi, who also is the team’s psychiatrist.

Meanwhile in Honolulu, where they played in Sunday’s Pro Bowl game, five Patriots said they believed that it was a player who gave a Boston newspaper the names of the alleged drug users on the team.

“I think it was a player,” said offensive guard John Hannah, indicating that he did not know who the informer was.

Linebackers Andre Tippett and Steve Nelson, running back Craig James and free safety Fred Marion agreed with Hannah.

“I think it has to be a player,” Nelson said. “Players are the only people close enough to know what’s going on.”
