Tennis Roundup : Connors and Edberg Advance
Jimmy Connors advanced to the quarterfinals of the $315,000 U.S. Indoor Tennis Championships Thursday night with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Matt Anger at Memphis.
Stefan Edberg, the defending champion from Sweden, routed countryman Peter Lundgren, 6-1, 6-2.
Also advancing to the quarterfinals were Brad Gilbert, who faces Connors tonight, and Johan Kriek, who meets Edberg. Other winners Thursday were Johan Kriek, Paul Annacone, Anders Jarryd and Mikael Pernfors, the former two-time NCAA singles champion from the University of Georgia.
In an indoor collegiate tournament at Houston, UCLA’s Michael Kures was upset Arkansas’ Joey Blake, 6-4, 7-5, while in the women’s division UCLA’s Joni Urban beat Ann Hulbert of Trinity, 6-2, 6-4. Also, Ricky Leach of USC defeated Pat Connor of Oklahoma State, 6-4, 6-2, and Brad Pearce of UCLA defeated Ville Jansson of Northeast Louisiana, 7-5, 6-4, and in a women’s match, Heliane Stedan of USC beat Kathy Foxworth of Houston, 6-4, 7-5.
