2 Cars for Al Unser Jr. Top Latest Indy Entries
Two cars for Al Unser Jr. are among the latest entries for the 70th annual Indianapolis 500, officials of Indianapolis Motor Speedway said.
Six entries were announced last week, increasing the official list to 12.
Unser finished one point behind his father to place second in last year’s Indy car racing season. Unser’s two entries, both Lola-Cosworths, are owned by Shierson Racing Inc. of Adrian, Mich.
A pair of March vehicles powered by Buick V-6 engines were entered. The Buick engine was used by last year’s two fastest qualifiers, including pole-sitter Pancho Carter and front-row qualifier Scott Brayton. Steve Chassey of Carmel will drive one car while the other has no driver listed.
Veteran Dick Simon, 52, has entered a pair of Lola-Cosworths, one for himself and another for Raul Boesel. Simon was the oldest driver in last year’s 500 while Boesel, a former Formula One driver, qualified at 206.498 m,p.h. in his Indianapolis debut a year ago.
Earlier entrants include Brayton, Kevin Cogan and Emerson Fittipaldi. Entries will be accepted until April 4. A field of about 70 cars is expected to challenge for 33 starting berths in the May 25 race.
