College Basketball Roundup : No. 3 Kansas Handles Missouri Easily, 100-66; Duke Rolls Over Stetson

Larry Brown was pleased but almost embarrassed the way his third-ranked Kansas Jayhawks demolished Missouri, 100-66, Tuesday night at Lawrence, Kan.

“We just played great. I don’t know any other explanation,” Brown said.

With Danny Manning scoring 27 points and leading a quick getaway, the Jayhawks scored the first nine points of the game, and Missouri never got closer than seven.

“We looked ready in the locker room, and I had a feeling we would play well,” Brown said. “I haven’t been in this situation many times, but I know what it’s like to be on the other end of a game like this. I don’t think we would have lost to many teams tonight, to be honest with you.”

The Jayhawks, 23-3 overall and leading the Big Eight with an 8-1 record, shot 71%, making 44 of 62 shots. Missouri’s fourth straight loss and third in four days dropped the Tigers to 17-11 and 4-5.

Manning, a 6-foot 11-inch sophomore, was dominant on both offense and defense. Twice he stole Missouri passes and drove in for layups. He hit three baskets from outside the free-throw line and four times he scored on short jumpers after rebounding a missed shot.

Duke 85, Stetson 66--Johnny Dawkins scored 18 points, Mark Alarie 17 and two other Duke players were in double figures as the second-ranked Blue Devils went outside the Atlantic Coast Conference to crush Stetson at Daytona Beach, Fla..

Duke, coming off a 75-59 ACC victory over Georgia Tech Sunday, showed no signs of a letdown and improved its record to 23-2. The Blue Devils are 14-0 in nonconference games.

Jay Bilas scored 14 points for the Blue Devils, and David Henderson added 12. Randy Anderson led Stetson (8-14) with 16 points, and Charles Stevenson had 12.

While Stetson made it interesting for a while, the outcome was never in doubt after Dawkins and Alarie combined for 17 first-half points as Duke built a 42-30 halftime lead.

Duke continued to pour it on at the outset of the second half, outscoring the Hatters, 20-11, in the opening minutes to take a 62-41 lead with 12:24 to go.

Notre Dame 81, Fordham 58--Jim Dolan didn’t miss a shot from the floor or the free-throw line and scored 13 points to lead No. 14 Notre Dame to victory at South Bend, Ind.

Notre Dame (17-4) led the entire game although Fordham pulled within 21-20 with 6:05 left in the first half. The Irish then went on an 11-0 run to pull away at 32-20 less than two minutes later. It was 38-22 at the half.

Dolan, who was 3 for 3 from the field and 7 of 7 from the free-throw line, was joined in double figures by Scott Hicks with 11 points and Ken Barlow and Tim Kempton with 10 each.

Tom Parrotta scored 14 points to lead Fordham (11-15).

Old Dominion 66, DePaul 53--Kenny Gattison had 18 points and 1 rebounds as the Monarchs blunted a late surge by DePaul to win at Norfolk, Va. The Monarchs, winning their fifth straight and 12th in the last 13 games, improved to 17-5 while DePaul fell to 13-8.

Old Dominion led, 34-25, at the half but was unable to shake the Blue Demons, who pulled within four at 48-44 with 4:45 remaining.

Old Dominion scored the next four points to lead, 52-44, with 3:58 left, and the Blue Demons never got any closer. The Monarchs increased their lead to as many as 14 points in the final minute.

Rod Strickland paced the Blue Demons with 15 points. Tony Jackson added 13 points, and Dallas Comegys had 12 points and 8 rebounds.

Oklahoma 85, Kansas State 77--Forward Darryl Kennedy had 32 points and 15 rebounds to lead eighth-ranked Oklahoma past Kansas State in a Big Eight game at Norman, Okla.

The victory was the Sooners’ 47th straight at home and gave them a 22-2 record, including 7-2 in the Big Eight. Kansas State, which lost to Oklahoma by just three points earlier this season, is 15-9 and 3-6.

Oklahoma guard Tim McCalister scored 17 of his 25 points in the first 20 minutes as the Sooners took a 42-27 halftime lead. David Bowie added 14 points for Oklahoma.

Norris Coleman led Kansas State with 31 points and topped all rebounders with 16. Joe Wright finished with 19 points, the only other Wildcat in double figures.

Connecticut 77, Pittsburgh 73--Earl Kelley scored 30 points as Connecticut ended a two-game losing streak with a Big East victory at Storrs, Conn.

Pittsburgh closed to within four points in the final minutes. But Kelley made seven of eight free-throws and Jeff King added four more in the final 2:06 as Connecticut held on to win.

Connecticut is 12-8 and 3-7 in the Big East. Pittsburgh, which has lost three of its last four games, fell to 14-8 and 5-6.
