COLLEGE BASKETBALL : CLU Ends Up 2 Short to Biola

Biola jumped out to nine-point lead at halftime, then survived a late run by Cal Lutheran and defeated the Kingsmen, 56-54, in a NAIA game at home Tuesday night.

Biola (19-3, 9-1) led, 56-50, with one minute remaining but the Kingsmen quickly cut the deficit with a pair of baskets. Cal Lutheran (5-19, 2-8) had a chance to tie the game but Pat Gibbs, who scored 10 points, missed a shot with four seconds left. The Kingsmen got the ball back again but were unable to take a shot.

Lionel Boyce led Cal Lutheran with 15 points. Biola was led by Joe Hutt, who scored 12.

Canyons 104, Antelope Valley 91--James Mixon scored 21 points and Ron Stapp added 20 as the Cougars won their second straight Mountain Valley Conference game at Antelope Valley.

The Cougars had six players in double figures. Vincent Ray scored 16, Anthony Hines had 12 points and 13 rebounds, Kevin Honaker had 10 points and eight assists and Doug Aitken had 11 points. Canyons guard Derek Hughes had a game-high 12 assists. Canyons is 6-1 in conference and 17-8 overall.

Antelope Valley, which fell to 2-5 in conference, got a game-high 31 points from Calvin Francis.

L. A. Southwest 90, Valley 82--Brian Brundage had 20 points and Bruce Chew scored 18 to lead the Cougars over the Monarchs in a Mountain Valley Conference game at Valley.

Valley (1-6, 10-16 overall) was led by Fred Lewis, who scored a game-high 21 points and John Windham, who had 20 points. Southwest is 7-0, 23-4 overall.

Valley (women) 75, Antelope Valley 57--Tina Johnson scored 19 points and had 17 rebounds to lead four Valley players who scored in double figures at Antelope Valley, which is ranked No. 12 in Southern California by the JC Athletic Bureau.

Lenice Collins had 15 points, Maryjo Testa had 12 and Jill Daniels had 12 points and a game-high 18 rebounds as the Monarchs improved their Mountain Valley conference record to 6-1. Valley is 13-11 overall. Miesha Worthy scored a team-high 16 points for Antelope Valley, which dropped to 4-4 in conference.

Cal Lutheran (women) 89, The Master’s 60--The Regals, led by Joni Thompson’s 17 points, avenged an earlier NAIA District III loss and set a school record for most wins in a season with 12.

If Cal Lutheran (12-12, 4-10) wins at least one of its remaining two games, it will be the first time the Regals have had at least a .500 record. The Master’s is 5-13 and 2-10.

Cal Lutheran was also led by Gloria Phillipps, who had 15 points and 18 rebounds. Kim Galbreathe did not score but had a game-high seven assists for the Regals. Michelle Carter led The Master’s with 17 points.
