Torrance : Stop Signs Approved

Despite opposition from police and the city Department of Transportation, the City Council unanimously approved replacing yield signs with four-way stop signs and adding a crossing guard at the intersection of Ronald Avenue and Towers Street near Towers Elementary School.

The council sided with residents and parents of students even though city traffic engineer Daniel Collins said in a report that the volume of traffic at the intersection is not high enough to merit stop signs and that the $4,500 annual cost for the crossing guard would divert city funds from other traffic safety problems.

“We’re elated,” said Kathy Yates, who lives near the intersection and has two children attending Towers School. “We didn’t think we were going to get it. We went in asking for a two-way stop and they gave us a four-way.
