Santa Monica : Assemblyman Backs Proposal

Assemblyman Gray Davis (D-Los Angeles) appeared before the City Council on Tuesday to support a proposal to place pictures of missing children on public buildings and in the city’s newsletter.

The council voted unanimously to refer Councilman Alan Katz’s proposal to the city staff for study.

The photographs would be provided by the Foundation for the Protection of Children, a nonprofit group based in Beverly Hills that provides the pictures for use on products such as milk cartons. Davis is chairman of the organization.

Photographs of missing children would be posted on city-owned buildings, and Katz said the Board of Education, the Rent Control Board and the Chamber of Commerce would also be encouraged to distribute and post the pictures.

The foundation has recruited more than 300 companies and labor unions to help publicize missing children, Davis said. Last year, 12 of the 30 youngsters featured in the program were found, and two have been found this year, he said.
