A Mexican prisoner charged with three counts of burglary escaped from the Descanso honor camp early Thursday, sheriff’s deputies said.
The prisoner, who was being held for the Immigration and Naturalization Service, was identified as Mario Alvarez Diaz, 21.
Diaz was spotted by two deputies as he climbed over the fence that surrounds the facility, deputies said. Diaz fled on foot into the thick brush with the two deputies in pursuit.
Deputies from the Pine Valley and Alpine sheriff’s offices and members of the Border Patrol used dogs in the search but were unable to find Diaz, officials said.
