Local News in Brief : Victim’s Brother Held in Sepulveda Slaying

The Los Angeles County coroner’s office has identified the man shot and killed in a Sepulveda home Wednesday night as Russell Kress, 21.

Los Angeles police arrested his brother, Robert Kress, 23, in Chatsworth on Thursday afternoon on suspicion of murder, even though he did not fire the shotgun used in the killing, Detective Dan Riehl said. Robert Kress was held without bail, Riehl said.

Police said residents of the Sepulveda house, on the 9400 block of Noble Avenue, told investigators that the shooting occurred after the Kress brothers forced their way inside. One of the residents, Laurence Myers, 19, fired twice, hitting Russell Kress once in the upper body, Riehl said.

Myers and the other resident, Terry Lasko, 20, have not been arrested, Riehl said.

Robert Kress was arrested under a state law providing that people participating in a felony can be arrested for a related crime even if they do not commit it themselves, police said.

Although the brothers frequently stayed in the San Fernando Valley, Russell Kress’ most recent address was in Oildale, near Bakersfield, a coroner’s spokesman said.

Police declined to give other details of events leading to the shooting.
