Women’s Basketball Roundup : San Diego State Rolls Past Cal State Fullerton

Dee Dee Duncan scored 21 points and Shelda Arceneaux and Lisa Stevens each added 20 points to lead San Diego State to a 91-72 win over Cal State Fullerton in Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. action Thursday night at Peterson Gym in San Diego.

The Aztecs held a 44-30 halftime advantage and extended that lead to 24 at 66-42 before Fullerton rallied to within 11 points at 76-65 with four minutes remaining. The Aztecs then got two points from Stevens and two from Arceneaux to widen the gap and San Diego State was in control from that point.

The Aztecs improved their record to 5-4 in the PCAA and 12-12 overall. Fullerton fell to 5-5 and 7-15 overall. The Titans were led by Robin Holmes, who scored a game-high 28 points. Freshman forward Felicia Benson added 11 points and 14 rebounds for the Titans. Fullerton will play host to Pacific at 5 p.m. Saturday at Titan Gym. San Diego State plays host to UC Irvine at 7:30 Saturday night.

In other PCAA action:

Nevada Las Vegas 74, UC Irvine 59--After trailing at the half, 32-29, the Rebels outscored the Anteaters, 45-27, to win going away at Las Vegas. Misty Thomas paced UNLV with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Tawanna Terry was UCI’s leading scorer with 14 points. UNLV improved its records to 7-2 and 15-7. UCI dropped to 4-5 and 12-10.

Cal State Long Beach 121, University of the Pacific 86--Center Cindy Brown, making 18 of 21 shots from the field, scored 38 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the 49ers over the Tigers.

The win, their 11th in a row, improved Long Beach’s overall record to 20-2 and 8-0 in conference play. Pacific is 8-13 and 2-6.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. action:

UC Riverside 74, Chapman 68--Suzie Karr scored 18 of her 20 points in the second half as the Highlanders broke open a tight game at Riverside. Vanessa Potter added 18 points for Riverside (5-4, 16-6). Valerie Hartsfield led the Panthers (4-5, 14-9) with 21 points.

In Pac West action:

Arizona 76, UCLA 58--The Bruins lost at McKale Center despite getting 18 points from senior forward Anne Dean.

The fourth straight loss dropped the Bruins’ record to 9-14 overall, 1-4 in the Pac West. Arizona is 16-5 and 3-2.

Miroslava Acosta led Arizona with 27 points. Turnovers (19 in all) proved to be UCLA’s undoing.

Before this season, the UCLA women had never lost to Arizona. The Bruins lost to Arizona, 70-65, earlier this season at Pauley Pavilion.
