Derrick Chievous and Jeff Strong each scored 29 points to lead Missouri to a 101-88 upset of No. 8-ranked Oklahoma Thursday night at Columbia, Mo., in a Big Eight basketball game marred by 62 personal fouls.

Chievous scored 27 points in the second half to help the Tigers (18-11 overall, 5-5 in the conference), stave off the Sooners and snap a four-game losing streak.

The Tigers, who had lost six of seven games, jumped to an 18-1 lead as the Sooners (22-3, 7-3) missed their first seven shots. Anthony Bowie finally hit a field goal at 14:53 to make it 18-3. Oklahoma then connected on 15 of 18 free throws to pull within 50-41 at halftime.

Gary Leonard, Missouri’s starting center, fouled out less than two minutes into the second half. Starting forward Dan Bingenheimer followed him to the sidelines a few minutes later, but Chievous kept the Tigers going.

After the Sooners pulled within seven points midway through the second half, Chievous scored seven straight points to personally thwart the comeback bid.

Bowie had 31 points, and Darryl Kennedy and David Johnson added 20 apiece for the Sooners.

Kentucky 73, Alabama 71--Roger Harden hit a 22-footer with five seconds left to give the No. 11-ranked Wildcats a victory over the 18th-ranked Crimson Tide at Tuscaloosa, Ala., and a two-game lead in the Southeastern Conference.

Kenny Walker’s free throw put the Wildcats (21-3, 12-1) ahead by one point, and Ed Davender’s three-point play gave Kentucky a 71-67 lead with 2:38 left.

Derrick McKey scored two straight baskets to pull Alabama (17-5, 10-3) even, 71-71, with 30 seconds left.

Alabama’s zone defense denied Kentucky an inside shot, so Harden popped in his game winner just as he had done in an earlier victory over Louisiana State.

Alabama contained Walker, who scored 16 points, but James Blackmon scored 22 points for the Wildcats. Buck Johnson had 22 points for Alabama.

Bradley 54, Indiana State 52--Jim Les scored 16 points, and Mike Williams made a layup with 2:16 left for the winning points, but the 13th-ranked Braves had to survive two late shots by the Sycamores for a Missouri Valley Conference victory at Terre Haute, Ind.

Bryan Kegerreis missed a 20-footer for the Sycamores (10-11, 4-7) with five seconds left. Freshman Darrion Applewhite grabbed the rebound only to miss another 20-footer as time ran out.

Bradley (25-0, 12-1) built a 44-37 lead with 11:57 left but needed Les’ 22-foot jump shot with 5:35 remaining to tie the score, 48-48. The Braves broke away on Donald Powell’s only basket of the game and Hersey Hawkins’ two free throws with 3:40 left. The Sycamores never caught up.

Applewhite made a pair of free throws, but Williams sank a breakaway layup with 2:13 remaining.

Louisville 74, Cincinnati 58--Billy Thompson scored 23 points, and the 19th-ranked Cardinals beat the Bearcats for the first time in four tries in a Metro Conference game at Cincinnati.

Michigan 92, Minnesota 56--Roy Tarpley scored 21 points as the No. 10-ranked Wolverines trounced the Gophers in a Big Ten Conference game at Ann Arbor, Mich.

The Gophers (15-9, 5-6) were playing under their third coach this season--assistant Phil Saunders. Jimmy Williams, the interim coach after the resignation of Jim Dutcher, missed the game because of a death in his family.

Richard Rellford added 16 points for the Wolverines (21-3, 9-3).

Maryland 67, North Carolina State 66--Len Bias hit two free throws with 1:26 left, and the Terrapins held off the 17th-ranked Wolfpack in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Raleigh, N.C.

Bias, who scored 21 points, gave the Terrapins (13-10, 3-6) a 65-64 lead with 2:13 left on a three-point play, but Chris Washburn’s basket put the Wolfpack (17-7, 6-4) back on top with 2:04 left.
