Times, Other Papers Win Statewide Awards

The California Newspaper Publishers Assn. has given its top awards for general excellence during 1985 to the Los Angeles Times, the Modesto Bee, the News Chronicle of Thousand Oaks and the Daily News of Indio.
Among newspapers over 75,000 circulation, the Los Angeles Times won first place for general excellence, and the Orange County Register in Santa Ana won second place. The Times also won the award for best life style reporting.
Among newspapers with circulation between 25,000 and 75,000, the Modesto Bee won first place for general excellence and the Times-Advocate of Escondido won second place.
The News Chronicle of Thousand Oaks won first place for general excellence among newspapers between 10,000 and 25,000 circulation, and the Daily News of Indio was first for general excellence under 10,000 daily circulation.
Other large circulation newspapers honored were the San Diego Tribune for news writing; the Los Angeles Herald Examiner for the best editorial page; the Oakland Tribune for the best feature story and the Fresno Bee for the best reporting of spot news.
In special categories in the annual competition, the Davis Enterprise and the Dispatch in Gilroy won the largest number of awards with 10 each.
