Peter May of the Hartford Courant asked Boston forward Kevin McHale what he does with his time now that he’s sidelined by injuries.

“I keep calling up asking if anyone knows where Danny Ainge can find a jumper,” he said. “His is missing.”

Ainge is shooting 52% for the season, but in the last five games he’s 7 for 31. That’s 22.6%.

Wait a Minute: From an L.A. Open press release on amateur golfer Eric Woods: “More of a football player than a golfer, Woods attended UC Irvine on a football scholarship.”

Don’t look for his statistics in the record books. UC Irvine has never had a football team.

Wayne Cooper of the Denver Nuggets, matched against Manute Bol of the Washington Bullets at the opening tipoff Tuesday, couldn’t believe Bol’s greeting.

Cooper told Buddy Martin of the Denver Post: “Here’s this guy, 7-foot-7, I’m looking up at him, and he says, ‘What’s up, big guy?’ ”

Cooper stands 6-10.

Add Martin: Sorting out all the bad jokes on Bol’s height, he submitted this as the worst: “If Bol had ridden with Jesse James as a bank robber, he would have walked up to the teller and demanded: ‘Stick ‘em down!’ ”

From St. John’s Coach Lou Carnesecca, claiming the Redmen got too greedy when they almost blew a 23-point lead against Villanova Tuesday night: “In the last 10 minutes, we started to take home the chandeliers. We didn’t have to. We already had the lamps.”

Arnold Palmer is leading a drive on the Senior Tour to ban carts, but most of the seniors think they should be able to ride.

Chi Chi Rodriguez told Thomas Boswell of the Washington Post that 74-year-old Sam Snead, who has had leg problems, certainly should have the benefit of a cart.

Said Chi Chi: “If FDR could run the country from a wheelchair, Sam Snead should be able to ride a golf cart.”

A couple of readers have expressed disbelief of Larry Bird’s claim that he made 361 straight free throws in practice, but he’s not anywhere near the record.

According to the Guinness Sports Record Book, Ted St. Martin, now of Jacksonville, Fla., made 2,036 straight free throws on June 25, 1977.
