A second trial will be sought for Virl H. Earles, who was driving a speed boat that collided with a buoy in Anaheim Bay in 1984, killing five passengers. Earles’ first trial for manslaughter ended in mistrial last month after nine of 12 Orange County Superior Court jurors voted for acquittal. Judge Jean H. Rheinheimer will hold a Feb. 28 hearing to determine whether to dismiss the case or grant Deputy Dist. Atty. John D. Conley’s request for a second trial for the 30-year-old Seal Beach man.
