Another Warm Day Today, but Sea Breezes on the Way

Blazing blue skies and summer-like temperatures are expected to linger through today, but more seasonable conditions will return to San Diego County Wednesday, the National Weather Service said.

The high-pressure system that kept skies clear and temperatures warm for the last three days is slowly moving east, which will allow cooler ocean breezes to blow onshore late today and Wednesday, said Grady Svoboda, a weather service forecaster.

Monday’s 85-degree high temperature at Lindbergh Field was just 4 degrees shy of the record set on Feb. 24, 1921, Svoboda said.

However, daytime temperatures along the coast today will drop about five degrees. Inland high temperatures are predicted to be in the 85- to 90-degree range.

Nighttime temperatures in most areas of the county will range between 50 and 55 degrees.

The first “unhealthful” air quality of the month was reported in Oceanside on Monday, and more smoggy conditions are predicted for the North County coastal area today, said Virginia Bigler-Engler, a meteorologist for the Air Pollution Control District.

On Monday, Oceanside was recorded as having a 113 on the pollution standard index, in which 100 is considered the maximum count for clean air, Bigler-Engler said. Del Mar was recorded as 92; El Cajon, 59; Alpine, 67, and downtown San Diego, 34.

Conditions in the mountains will continue to be mild and clear with daytime temperatures about 63 degrees. Overnight lows will be about 40.

Svoboda said deserts will not be affected by the cooling trend; temperatures will remain in the 90s most of the week.
