Channon Phipps, an 11-year-old hemophiliac whose blood contains AIDS antibodies, returned to his Mission Viejo classroom--and the day went “very smooth”--after an Orange County judge ordered him readmitted, Saddleback Valley School District officials said. The district had provided Channon with tutoring at home, saying he would not be readmitted until it could be determined that he posed no risk of spreading the disease. The boy does not have acquired immune deficiency syndrome but is presumed to have been exposed through blood treatments he receives for hemophilia. Channon’s guardian, Deborha Phipps, filed suit against the school district last year, and county health officials who examined Channon as part of the litigation concluded that his return to classes would pose no substantial risk.
