Glenn Anderson and Wayne Gretzky scored 97 seconds apart early in the first period and goaltender Grant Fuhr made some game-saving saves in the final period Monday night to give the Edmonton Oilers a 3-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens.

Craig MacTavish scored what proved to be Edmonton’s winning goal in the second period.

Lucien DeBlois scored for Montreal in the first period and Mario Tremblay in the third as the Oiler defense limited the Canadiens to 20 shots against Fuhr.

The Oilers, chastised by Coach Glen Sather after blowing a 4-1 lead in Saturday’s loss to the Boston Bruins, allowed Montreal only nine shots in the first two periods.

After Tremblay’s goal at 8:25, the Canadiens had three good scoring chances. Fuhr made the saves on all three.

N.Y. Rangers 5, Minnesota 1--Tomas Sandstrom, Rob Whistle and Pierre Larouche scored first-period goals, leading the Rangers past the North Stars at New York for their sixth straight victory.

The defeat broke a three-game winning streak for Minnesota.

New York increased its lead to 5-0 in the second period on goals by Mark Pavelich and Tom Laidlaw.

Nine seconds later, Ranger goalie Glen Hanlon lost his shutout bid when Dino Ciccarelli beat him with a 30-footer.

Larouche has scored in seven consecutive games, tying Rod Gilbert for second most in club history. Andy Bathgate scored in 10 straight games in 1962.

Sandstrom suffered a possible concussion on his goal when accidentally struck by the stick of Minnesota defenseman Dave Langevin. He was taken to Lenox Hill Hospital for observation.
