Severiano Ballesteros, playing golf in the United States for the first time since his recent dismissal from the PGA Tour, blasted the action as unfair to foreign golfers and blamed tour director Deane Beman.
“I think it’s a personal thing between Deane and me, more than anything else,” said Ballesteros, who is participating in the Tournament Players’ Assn. Florida Cup tournament in Lake City, Fla.
Ballesteros qualified for the tour on the basis of money earned but was banned from the tour because he had not played in the required 15 PGA events in the United States in 1985.
“For American players it’s a good rule,” Ballesteros said. “But for a foreign player it’s unfair. People have to realize I have other commitments, especially in Europe. Our PGA has really grown up.”
